Hyehwa 1938 is a hanok that was built about 80 years ago. It preserves the frame but also carries various traces of changes of a hanok in Seoul that have been created over a long period. We wanted to make a harmonious space by keeping the blending, adding modern materials and functions to the form of hanok.
The building is rectangular-shaped on a square land, and there are two L-shaped hanoks sharing a garden in the middle. We intended to make the garden a hotel-like space. We lowered the height of the floored room and didn’t discard the stones that came out from it, but used them to build the inner wall that gives a special first impression.
